WHY: 'Cause fungi are fabulous and you want to connect with other fungal folks! "Radical Mycology is a grassroots movement that produces and distributes accessible mycological and fungal cultivation information to enhance the resilience of humans, their societies, and the environments they touch" -Peter McCoy.
WHY PART TWO: Come hear a talk by Zaac Chaves:
George Washington Carver and the Mycology of the Poor
Why would fungi be import to a survivor of slavery? Moreover how would Carver find it imperative and practical to bring amateur mycology back to familiar hardscrabble livelihoods under various stresses of denuded soils, industrializing agriculture, and urban migration. A local ghost story will guide part of our journey as we connect mycology to poverty, race, and gathering food. Prepare for an exhibition of Carver's posited means of human livelihood, including and not limited to foraging.
Often turned to for field expertise regarding fungi, Zaac Chaves guides people through realms in which the details matter immensely. Zaac has worked as a naturalist with Westchester County. He is a specialized collector at the behest of The New York Botanical Gardens, The National Parks Service, and Harvard. He has and has been honored by the Explorer’s Club regarding his Transtaïga bicycle journey.
